Position paper on the European Bioeconomy Strategy
In view of the overexploitation of primary natural resources, rising greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss, along with soaring pollution from single-use plastic packaging waste and microplastic, the EU needs a new bioeconomy strategy in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s targets for biodiversity protection and restoration.
EMPPA welcomes the European Commission’s initiative to present a Strategy by 2026 that will drive innovation and investment in biobased solutions and incentivize the use of regenerative resources.
In our position paper, we call for a Strategy that promotes the use of biomass-based – as opposed to fossil-based – secondary raw materials in close collaboration between farmers and the packaging industry as strategic partners in a circular bioeconomy.
